Using growth and geochemical composition of Clathromorphum compactum to track multiscale North Atlantic hydro-climate variability

چکیده
Records of ocean/atmosphere dynamics over the past centuries are essential to understand processes driving climate variability. This is particularly true for Northwest Atlantic which a key region with an role in global regulation. Over two decades, coralline red algae have been increasingly used as environmental and climatic archives marine realm hold potential extend long-term instrumental measurements. Here, we investigate possibility extract information from annual growth patterns geochemical composition algae, Clathromorphum compactum, Saint-Pierre & Miquelon (SPM), French archipelago southwest Newfoundland. However, measurements C. compactum trends challenging due difficulties identifying lines directly. So far, pattern investigations were commonly performed based on data calcite matrix. Predictability of North Atlantic Multidecadal Climate Variability
Atmospheric weather systems become unpredictable beyond a few weeks, but climate variations can be predictable over much longer periods because of the coupling of the ocean and atmosphere. With the use of a global coupled ocean-atmosphere model, it is shown that the North Atlantic may have climatic predictability on the order of a decade or longer. These results suggest that variations of the d...
متن کاملVariability of the North Atlantic summer storm track: mechanisms and impacts on European climate
The summertime variability of the extratropical storm track over the Atlantic sector and its links to European climate have been analysed for the period 1948–2011 using observations and reanalyses. The main results are as follows. (1) The dominant mode of the summer storm track density variability is characterized by a meridional shift of the storm track between two distinct paths and is relate...
متن کاملNorth Atlantic Climate Variability: Phenomena, Impacts and Mechanisms
Variability of the North Atlantic Oscillation and the Tropical Atlantic dominate the climate of the North Atlantic sector, the underlying ocean and surrounding continents on interannual to decadal time scales. Here we review these phenomena, their climatic impacts and our present state of understanding of their underlying cause. Copyright © 2001 Royal Meteorological Society.
متن کاملNorth Atlantic climate variability in coupled models and data
We show that the observed zonally averaged jet in the Northern Hemisphere atmosphere exhibits two spatial patterns with broadband variability in the decadal and inter-decadal range; these patterns are consistent with an important role of local, mid-latitude ocean–atmosphere coupling. A key aspect of this behaviour is the fundamentally nonlinear bi-stability of the atmospheric jet’s latitudinal ...
